ONE WORLD. ONE HEALTH.
Our mission is to work for, and with, communities in need to foster the health of animals, people, and the environments that sustain us.
Helping to improve the livelihoods of communities in need throughout the world is what Veterinarians without Borders/ Vétérinaires sans Frontières – Canada (VWB/VSF-Canada) is all about. Established in 2005, VWB/VSF-Canada works with governments, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, local communities, farmers’ groups, and international agencies, to tackle root-cause issues affecting public health, animal health and ecosystem health in developing communities around the world.
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES:
We believe that the health of the many animals with which we share this planet, the ecosystems which are our common home, and the health of our own species are deeply connected. We seek solutions that address the root causes of the challenges facing disadvantaged communities. By sharing our skills and expertise in animal and ecosystem health, we strive to help improve human health, food production systems, and promote sustainable livelihoods.
We are guided by the aspirations of the communities with which we work and are committed to participatory and inclusive approaches to development. We strive to build local capacity wherever we go and believe that sustainable solutions are most often created when they are locally identified and owned.
We recognize that we live in a global community where the health and wellbeing of people, animals, and ecosystems at home depend upon the health and wellbeing of people, animals, and ecosystems around the world. We therefore strive to assist those working in animal health related fields, including public and ecosystem health, agriculture, companion animal health, and wildlife conservation, to become better global citizens.
We seek to collaborate with partners at all levels from local community groups, to academics, to governmental and non-governmental organizations. We believe that effective partnerships promote synergy and strengthen project outcomes. We draw on expertise from across disciplines, not only within our own field of animal health, but extending well beyond, including basic sciences, public health, economics, social science, environmental management, and the humanities.
We respect people, culture, local knowledge, human rights, laws, animal welfare, and the environment. We recognize that these aims can conflict at times, but we strive to work with people where they live and together develop peaceful and sustainable solutions.
We are committed to sharing our expertise and knowledge and continuously learning from our partners. In the spirit of self-reflection, we evaluate our successes and mistakes and we strive to openly address lessons learned. We seek the best research and input to create innovative solutions to improve upon our work.
We operate transparently and are committed to being accountable to our partners, beneficiaries, members and donors. We manage our resources efficiently and with integrity.
